Major: killing Hulrun

Parts (in this chapter): 4

Parts of the Killing Hulrun reactivity pack in Chapter 1 focus on the immediate reactions of companions and NPCs (Aranka, Ramien, and Irabeth) to the news of Hulrun's death. Other components of this pack, such as Informing Inquisitor Liotr of Hulrun's death, come into play in later chapters.

We have added a conversational cutscene that will trigger immediately after the battle with Inquisitor Hulrun and his cohorts is over (i.e., all enemies are dead).

This can happen in several cases: upon meeting and choosing to protect Ramien (before or after the Defender's Heart battle - these are two separate injections), or upon meeting Aranka's disguised friend (if Hulrun has not been encountered and killed before).

Companion lines added for: Camellia, Daeran, Ember, Lann, Nenio, Seelah (Daeran interjects, if present), Ulbrig* , Wenduag, Woljif.

* if The Last Sarkonians DLC is installed

if Ember is present

“They cried and begged for him to stop. It reminded him of the past mistakes, so he didn’t stop. And neither did you.”

if Wenduag is present

“That’s right! Cross us and die.” {n}She smiles, her eyes are full of malice and glee.{/n}

In the vanilla game, there is an option to tell Aranka about Hulrun's death. However, we found it a bit odd that the party members did not react to this. And then there is the question of Aranka's reaction — this is big news, and besides being relieved that the madman is dead, Desna's followers should be at least slightly disturbed by the very fact of the killing.

Companion lines added for: Camellia, Daeran, Ember, Nenio (Daeran interjects, if present), Seelah (Woljif interjects, if present), Wenduag, Woljif.

Text snippet(s)

if Woljif is present

“Word of advice, chief: don’t go around confessing your crimes. Especially in a room full of people. Makes it harder to deny it to the authorities later on.”

if Seelah is present

“I still can’t believe you did it!"

if Woljif is present
“See? Now you have a paladin on your back, and let me tell you, they are no joke when it comes to the law!”

Killing Hulrun Ramien Plot Religion

Saving Ramien from Hulrun is one of the reasons* players might choose to kill the Inquisitor; there are specific lines for that in the vanilla game. And now there is a way to tell Ramien about it. Or just share the joy of the kill—whatever suits the Commander more.

* Protecting Ember is another one that has a specific line in the game. Both of these reasons can be referenced at the end of Daeran's Q3in Chapter 5.

if Desna is the deity of choice AND the player told Ramien that he was the reason Hulrun was killed

{n}The priest goes silent for a moment, then nods slowly.{/n} “I am thankful for my life, {mf|brother|sister} dreamer, though it still pains me that more blood was spilled. […] But please do not mistake my melancholy for ingratitude! May Desna watch over your travels and keep you safe.”

Killing Hulrun Irabeth Plot Connectivity

Since Inquisitor Hulrun is (well, was) one of the main organizers of the city's defense, there may be a reason to tell Irabeth about his death. After all, she is trying to coordinate the defense on her side, too.

However, if the Commander decides to conceal the reason of Hulrun's death, they will have to pass a DC 17 Bluff check. There are currently no consequences to failing this check, as Irabeth cannot allow to lose another person able to fight, but she will notice that something's wrong.

If Irabeth is informed about Hulrun, Inquisitor Liotr will mention it later in Chapter 2.

Text snippet(s)

if the Bluff check was successfull

“Iomedae be with us. Another life lost to these bastards.” {n}She punches the table.{/n} “We are stretched thin already. Losing Hulrun will cost us more than you can imagine. I’ll get to work organizing our forces and assigning a field commander to make up for this loss.”
